Chapter Six

Abi's phone vibrated for at least the hundreth time in the past 10 minutes. I grabbed it and looked at all the notifications she was receiving from some social network site. She'd been on her phone a lot lately, always wearing the same expression that I kept telling her would give her permanent wrinkles if she furrowed her brow any more.

I sighed, hating to pry into her privacy, but I blamed it on curiosity and unlocked her phone. My eyes widened as i read the messages that just went on and on from random girls from school. They ranged from just calling her names to more extreme ones telling her to kill herself. Anger boiled inside me and I stormed up the stairs, barging into the bathroom where I heard Abi let out a little scream.

"What the hell Abi?" I shouted.

"What the hell yourself?!" She shouted back at me from the other side of the shower curtain.

"Why didn't you tell me about the messages you were getting?" I demanded, holding he phone up as if she could see it.

She was silent, the only sound in the room being the water running.

"Get out." She said.

"Abi-"

"I said get out!"

I left, but I wasn't going to let her go on this. I waited for her in the den, the clock ticking away into the silence of the house.

She eventually came down stairs and sat beside me, averting her eyes from mine.

"I'm sorry I yelled." I said quietly. "But why didn't you tell me what was going on?"

"I didn't want you to worry." She mumbled, staring at her hands which she fiddled with in her lap.

"How could you accept an invitation to this party, knowing what these girls thought of you?" I asked, my voice raising. "What did you think they would do?"

She just shook her head and scrunched up her face, trying to hide the tears that were already falling down her cheeks. "I just want to be normal!" She sobbed. "I thought if Faye went with me, everything would be okay!"

I stared at her, my heart hurting. I knew how much she did want to be normal, always trying her hardest, but she was just never accepted. She eventually gave up, or so I'd thought. I pulled her in to a hug and let her cry until all that was left were soft sniffles.

"I'm not approving of you going to this party." I said, pulling her away and looking at her tear stained face. "So I'm taking you both and you are not going to leave my side."

She rolled her eyes but agreed when I gave her a stern glare.

I parked outside Faye's home, keeping the engine running while Abi called her to let her know we were here. I finally saw the front door open and Faye stepped out, wearing a small black dress that hugged her curves. I couldn't tear my gaze away, my eyes following her as she walked towards the car. Abi punched me in the back of the head and I cleared my throat just as Faye slipped into the back seat beside Abi.

"Hey guys!" She chirped. I peered in the rear view mirror and almost choked when I saw her up close. She had the perfect amount of makeup on that brought out her gorgeous green eyes and soft, pouty lips. Abi cleared her throat and I had to tear my eyes away from her, swallowing hard and trying to focus on something other than kissing her.

I turned the heat up for Faye when I saw her rubbing her arms, and she shot me a smile when she noticed me staring at her through the mirror again.

Jess's house wasn't far from Faye's, the thumping music and bright lights giving it away. I parked my Wrangler beside a brand new Audi and hopped out, opening the back door for the girls. Abi jumped out first, Faye following close. She brushed against my arm as she slipped out of the car and we stared at each other as the familiar tingles sent shivers of excitement down my spine.

"Let's goooo!"Abi shouted. I smiled at Faye and she smiled back, hiding her embarrassment behind her hair. I took a chance and brushed my fingers against hers, slipping my hand into hers when she didn't move it away. She entwined our fingers and I could feel our hearts beating at lightening speeds. We followed Faye up the winding path, the noise from the house getting louder. Jess stepped out of the front door as we climbed up the stairs and I noticed the way she stared at my hand in Faye's.

"Welcome!" She announced. "I'm so glad you could make it." She wrapped her arms around me, forcing Faye to step away. I didn't return the hug, despite her holding onto me for much longer than required. She eventually gave up and stepped back, eyeing me like I was a piece of meat. "Come on in." She purred, practically ignoring everyone but me. We followed her inside and I was thankful that someone else caught her attention. We squeezed through all the people that filled the rooms until we made it outside, where the cold was appealing to only a small handful.

Faye poured us some punch and we stood around a fire that was burning in a barrel. She stood close, occasionally brushing against me as she chattered away to Abi, sending sparks through my veins that made me smile every time.

A cold feeling passed through me suddenly and I looked behind me, a person disappearing behind a wall sparking my interest. I tried to shake the feeling away, but it was as if someone was behind me, blowing an eerie cold breath down my neck. I blocked out the noise of the people around me and tried to sense anything out of the ordinary.

"I know you can sense me, Cain." An all too familiar voice said, and I prayed it wasn't him.

"Abel." I muttered under my breath and I heard him chuckle. I scanned the area looking for him, my jaw starting to hurt from how tight I was clenching it. Someone bumped into me and a rush of noise filled my ears as I lost concentration. I winced and apologised to the drunk guy stumbling away, bumping into more people as he went. When I looked back, Abel was standing before me where Faye and Abi had been, a smirk on his face.

"Lost someone?" He asked, his eyes burning into mine.

"Abel. What did you do to them?" I demanded, baring my teeth.

"Now now big brother, is that how you treat someone you haven't seen in two years?" He paced around me, my eyes never leaving him.

"Don't play your games Abel, where are they?!" I was shouting now and people had begun to stare, whispering under their breaths. I looked at their faces, eyes wide and red from drunkenness. When I looked back, Abel had disappeared and I cursed under my breath, ignoring people's protests as I pushed through them, looking for Faye.

I followed the pull I had towards Faye, trusting it to lead me to her. I climbed up the staircase, taking three steps at a time, looking through every room I passed. I stopped when I looked into one and saw a dark figure standing near the window.

"Faye?" I called into the darkness, feeling the wall for a light switch.

"Cain!" A familiar voice that wasn't Faye's, called out to me. I turned the light on and Jess stood before me, running her hand along my chest. How had she gotten to me so quickly? I pulled her hand away and stepped back.

"Sorry, I'm looking for Faye. Have you seen her?" I asked, backing away from Jess as she followed me around the room. She slammed the door shut and appeared before me at an inhumane speed, the shock allowing her to push me back onto the bed behind me and climb on top of me. "What's so good about her? Why can't it be me?" She whined, her face inches from mine.

"What the hell?" I growled, trying to push her away. "What are you?"

"Why don't you ask your brother?" She whispered in my ear, before cupping my face and kissing me. She gripped my shirt and ripped it as I pushed her off me. Her hands flew all over my body, the touch feeling like venom on my skin. I shoved her to the floor, wiping my lips as I stared down at her whimpering. She looked towards the door and smiled icily, looking back up at me with a smug expression. My head whipped towards the door and Faye stood there, a disappointed look on her face. She shook her head, staring at me with cold eyes. "So much for soul mates, you asshole."

I walked towards her but she put her hand up, stopping me. "Don't."

"Faye, it's not what you think!"

She shook her head again and stepped back, turning and hurriedly walking away as a sob escaped her throat.

I squeezed my eyes shut, a low growl rumbling in my throat.

"Cain?" I heard Jess ask, worry in her voice.

"Leave me the hell alone." I growled, storming out of the room.

Abi was dancing to some off beat music, a drink in one hand and the other wrapped around some jock's neck as he whispered things in her ear I wished I couldn't hear. I pulled him off her and he stumbled back into a group of gossiping girls.

"Caaain!" She slurred, smiling sheepishly up at me. I held her up and cursed, pissed off at myself for letting her get into such a state.

"I'm going to take you to my car, Abi. Okay?" I started to lead her out of the room, holding on tight as she wiggled in my arms. She finally gave up and slumped against me, making it difficult to walk. Picking her up, I slung her over my shoulder and quickly walked down the path to where I'd parked, gently laying her in the back seat and covering her with a blanket. I locked the doors and ran back up to the house, calling out Faye's name.

I scoured the entire house, pushing people over as I charged through the massive groups of drunk teens. The music pounded in my ears and people's laughter began to sound like shrieks. I started to panic and I couldn't focus on the connection I had with her, my mind a blur as I imagined Abel getting his hands on her.

I ran outside, walking further away to where the noise was just a buzz in my ears. I relaxed, cleared my mind and focused on Faye. I concentrated on her scent, her sound, her pull. The sky was clear, the full moon casting an eerie glow over the small lake I walked towards. I stopped when I saw a small figure sitting close to the edge, hugging her knees and looking out over the water.

Faye

I breathed a sigh of relief, but I tensed up again when I saw Abel standing a few meters behind her.

Don't you touch her. I growled telepathically to my brother, hoping he had his guard down and was listening to me.

He turned and smiled, his red eyes glowing in the dark of the night. Turning back to Faye, he walked to stand beside her, and I saw her jump when she realised he was there.

"Cain?" I heard her ask.

"Wrong." Abel replied, looking down at her.

I couldn't stand here watching any longer and I bolted down to the lake, crashing into Abel's side and knocking him to the ground.

"Why are you here?" I shouted, pinning him down. He had gotten much stronger since I last saw him, and I strained against his struggling. But as first born, I was stronger and I held him down.

"What's going on?" I heard Faye cry out. "Stop fighting!"

I turned to see she was standing now, backing away from us. It was a bad move as Abel managed to break one arm free and punch me in the jaw, crawling away when I rolled off him, cradling my dislocated jaw. Faye ran towards me and cried out as I cracked my jaw back into place.

This is far from over. Abel said for only me to hear, before disappearing deep into the surrounding forest.

It had been a long time since I'd fought with Abel, and as pups we had done more, to the point of broken bones. I rubbed my jaw, remembering the last time he'd punched it, resulting in a shattered bone. Of course I'd repaid him with shattered ribs and a broken leg. Those days, we laughed over our injuries. Now though, I took the last thing he said as a warning.

My body suddenly exploded like it was on fire and it took me a moment to realise that Faye had wrapped herself around me. I put my arms around her and pulled her into a hug.

"Who was that, Cain?" She mumbled into my shirt. "He looked just like you."

I let out a shaky breath. "He's my brother, Abel. He's my twin."

"Is he the wolf in my dreams?" She whispered, but we both knew the answer to that.

I helped her up and only then noticed how drunk she was. She struggled to stand, looking exhausted. We walked slowly back up to the house where people had either passed out or had found someone to make out with. We skipped the goodbye's and walked towards my car.

"Cain?" I heard someone call out. "Cain is that you? I wanted to apologise for earlier."

We stopped and looked around, but no one was behind us. I saw Jess walking between the cars, calling out my name. "Cain! I know you're here."

I saw Abel appear behind her, a disgusted look on his face.

"Oh my God! You scared me!" Jess said when she turned around, laughing nervously. "Wh-what are you doing?" She suddenly stammered.

Abel stalked up to her and twisted her head, her body dropping to the ground with a thud. I covered Faye's mouth as she screamed and pulled her into me, holding tightly as she dug her nails into my arms and cried. I watched as Abel stepped over Jess's lifeless body and disappeared down the road.

"You have to get to my car." I whispered, slipping my keys into her hand.

"No!" She shook her head against my chest. "I'm not leaving you!"

I sighed and held her close as we quickly walked to my car. I watched Faye get into the passengers seat and buckle up before I shut the drivers side door and locked the car.

"Where are you going?!" I heard her yell from inside. I held up two fingers, hoping she understood that I meant that I'd only be two minutes. "Cain!" She screamed as I jogged away.

I found Jess's body and gently lifted it up, swearing as I carried her up the stairs and lay her down on them, praying that whoever found her would think she had been drunk and fallen, breaking her neck. I looked down at her, her body looking smaller and more fragile than ever.

My brother had turned her into a werewolf, into a feral minion that would do his bidding, disposing of her when she didn't do as she was told. His mind had definitely become twisted and I knew I would have to be on my guard. I had to protect Faye.

When I got back to my car, Faye had fallen asleep, gently snoring as she slept off the gruesome night.

I was glad that both girls were still asleep when I got home. I carried Abi inside first, mum helping me get her to her room and putting her into bed as I went to get Faye.

After I'd carried Faye inside, I lay her on the big couch in the den in front of the fireplace. Mum came in and draped a thick blanket over her, looking at me with disappointment.

"Mum I-" My voice cracked and I sat down near Faye's feet, staring at the ground. I was suddenly exhausted, my muscles felt weak and I could no longer stand.

She sat in the recliner across from me and took my hand.

"Abel's back." I eventually managed to croak. I heard her suck her breath in and looked up to see her brow furrowed. She squeezed my hand to try and reassure me, but I could sense her concern.

"Get some sleep, Cain. We'll talk in the morning."

She stood up and walked out, gently squeezing my shoulder as she did. I fell back and shut my eyes, Abel's grinning face staring back at me as he stood before Jess's dead body.

I turned my head and looked at Faye sleeping somewhat peacefully. I tried to distract myself by remembering how gorgeous she had looked at the beginning of the night. Her cute smile when she caught me staring at her in the mirror, how she had entwined our fingers, occasionally squeezing my hand as we walked, and the way she would purposely brush against me, the thrill of it making me blush even now.

I shut my eyes again, imagining it had been her kissing me instead of Jess, and a smile tugged at my lips as i plunged into a deep sleep.
