Chapter Five

I stood in my dark room touching my cheek, staring out into the sky which had become darker, a rumble of thunder in the distance. I wanted to pinch my cheek and wake myself up incase this was all just a bizarre dream, but I didn't want to change the feeling I still felt on my skin from where Cain had kissed me. I smiled and could feel my cheeks heat up. A guy that could shame a Greek God had just called me beautiful, and announced that I was forever his. Oh yeah, he was also apparently a werewolf.

I sighed and went back to bed, the cool sheets feeling good on my hot skin. There was no way that I was going to sleep though. I lay in the dark, looking at the ceiling that would light up whenever a lightning bolt flashed across the sky. Thunder cracked right over the house, making the room vibrate with its boom and I shivered under my duvet. The rains came then, pouring down hard on the tin roof, making it hard to concentrate on my thoughts. I took the chance to try and sleep, shutting my eyes and letting the pattering of the rain drops ease me into a deep sleep.

Sun light flickered over my face and I welcomed the warmth it provided. Something blocked the sun and I opened my eyes to see Cain looking down at me. I leaned into his hand that cupped my cheek and smiled up at him.

"Hey." I whispered.

"Hey." He whispered back, before leaning down and kissing me deeply.

My fingers laced through his hair, exciting him as he kissed me harder and faster.

He pulled away and I opened my eyes slightly, biting my lip as I smiled seductively. My eyes widened and my mouth opened, a scream escaping my throat as I saw someone else above me. He looked identical to Cain, aside from the white hair and the red eyes, which stared down at me as though they were the Devil's himself. His grin became wider, his teeth turning into fangs. His whole face contorted slowly before my eyes, like he was in slow motion. I heard the sound of cracking bones and the ripping of fabric. I didn't stop screaming, I couldn't stop, and when he stood above me as a huge white werewolf, I knew I was going to die.

I sat up in bed, the storm still raging outside, a loud thunder clap making me jump. I let out a sob and grabbed my phone, fumbling with it and squinting as the bright light blinded me. I threw the phone to the end of my bed when I realised I couldn't actually talk to the person I was wanting to talk to the most.

The storm passed but the rain continued, the constant thrum on the roof had become a hazy noise in my head. My eyes were puffy from the lack of sleep and the random crying sessions I'd had throughout the night. The sun had risen, the dark clouds lightening a couple of shades being the only indicator.

I struggled to concentrate in my classes, my mind still going over the talk with Cain and the dream.

Faye!

My name being shouted made me jump in my seat. I looked around the room, but everyone was still listening to Mr. Baker drag on about the Russian Revolution. Not even Mark, the guy that managed to pass the class despite sleeping through it every time, had budged. I rubbed my face and sighed.

The noise of students chatting away during break made it easier to concentrate on other things, but since the only thing distracting me was Abi bouncing up and down in her seat, talking about some party, I could only concentrate on the fact that I knew what she secretly was. I could see her mouth moving, and I nodded occasionally, hoping it was an appropriate response, but I couldn't hear her as my mind was still trying to process all this information it had recently received.

"Earth to Faye!" Abi called, waving her hand in front of my face.

"Huh?"

"Geez, did you listen to anything I just told you?"

I felt my cheeks burn up as I blushed and shook my head.

Abi made a tsk'ing sound. "We were invited to a party! Us!"

I frowned at the way she used the word 'us', but I guess I wasn't as popular here as I had been at my old school. I smiled then, a party was just what I needed. I was never huge on parties, but Kat used to drag me along with her to ones she was invited to and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy my time.

I smiled genuinely at Abi, suddenly excited. She grinned back, glad I approved of the invite.

"So when is it?" I asked, earning a frown as a response. She must have already told me and I blushed again, realising how much I hadn't listened to her.

"It's on Friday. I'll pick you up really early so you can't forget!"

A figure appeared beside the table we were sitting at and I looked up to see a girl with several layers of foundation smeared onto her face. Her grin made me sick, but she obviously thought it generated the complete opposite effect.

"So you'll be coming to the party?" She asked. Her voiced sounded like it was laced with venom.

"Um, we're still thinking about it." Abi responded quietly. This caused the clown to lose her grin.

"You have to come! It'll be fun." She 'promised', her fake grin coming back. Abi nodded, and when she appeared satisfied, the girl turned around with a flick of her hair, a group of girls trailing behind her.

"Who was that?" I asked, leaning towards Abi.

"Jess. She's like super rich and super popular. She kinda bullies me, a lot"

"And you don't think it's weird that she wants you at this party so badly?"

Abi shrugged and looked at her hands on the table. "I've never been to a party. I thought it would be okay if you came with me."

I smiled sincerely and put a hand over hers. "I'd love to go with you."

Her face lit up and it warmed me from inside. Surely I could keep her away from any trouble for one night.

"Hey." Cain said, suddenly sitting down next to me and making me jump for the umpteenth time today. "Is everything okay? I saw Jess talking to you."

Abi just nodded and smiled happily. The tingly electrified feeling I felt on my arm as Cain sat close to me made me shiver, and I could see that he was affected by it too.

Abi stopped smiling and looked at us quizzically. "Is everything okay?"

"Yeah." We both said in unison, making her frown even more.

The bell rang, signalling the end of lunch and we all stood up and shuffled around the table.

Abi gave me a quick wave and jogged to off to her next class. I began to walk away myself when Cain grabbed my hand. I turned to him and he let my hand go.

"I was, uh, wondering if you wanted to do something after school?" He asked nervously, rubbing a hand over his hair.

My God he was beautiful. I felt my mouth open and close a few times, but no words came out, I could only stare.

"Faye?"

I noticed the small gathering of gawking girls hanging around us, curious to why the most attractive guy at school was talking to me, and not them. The second bell rang and the girls scattered, Cain still stood there watching me and waiting for an answer.

"I'll just take that as a no, then." He mumbled and turned to leave.

"Cain wait! I'd love to do something." A couple of the remaining girls shot me evil looks over their shoulders as they walked out of the cafeteria.

His smile could melt icebergs.

Dad wasn't home when I got back, but I was sure he'd be fine to have Cain over for dinner.

After a quick shower, I checked the time and saw it was nearly six. I could smell something amazing, dad must have come while I had been in the shower. I bounced into the kitchen and sat on the edge of a stool.

"Hey, dad?" I asked, picking at a bowl of grapes.

"Hm?"

"I was wondering if Cain could come over for dinner?"

I saw him stiffen slightly. "I don't know about that Faye."

I frowned. I thought he liked Cain? Maybe he had other reasons for protecting them.

"Welllll, I kinda already invited him. He'll probably be here any minute."

He sighed and turned around, leaning against the counter. "I'd prefer you not associate yourself with him."

"Is it because he's a werewolf?" I questioned, crossing my arms. "He told me himself, dad, so don't try to deny the truth about this, too."

He opened his mouth but someone knocking on the door stopped him from saying any more. For now.

"Call us when dinners ready." I said as I walked out of the kitchen.

I opened the front door and faced Cain's broad back. As he turned around and flashed his award winning smile, I felt myself blush. I think I could get used to seeing his smile all the time.

"Hey." He said.

"Hey." I whispered back.

"You gonna let me in?" He chuckled and I realised I'd been staring, again. My ears grew hot and I held the door open for him, following him inside.

"Hey Lucas." I heard him say and looked past him to see my dad standing in the hallway.

"Cain, how are you?" He asked, shaking his hand. "Do you think we could have a quick talk?" He looked at me and said "Alone."

I huffed and went into the other room, stopping near the archway to try and eavesdrop.

"Why did you tell her what you were?" I heard my dad ask Cain in a harsh whisper. Cain either didn't respond, or he just talked extremely quietly. "Don't tell me you think she's your mate?"

"I know she is." Cain replied, his voice confident.

I could hear my dad groan, but couldn't make out what either of them said next. I panicked when I heard footsteps coming in my direction and struggled to look like I'd been doing something other than listening in on them.

"Eavesdropping is a terrible habit, Faye." Cain said, poking his head around the corner.

"How did you know?"

He pointed at his ears. "I could hear you breathing. It was pretty loud."

I felt myself blushing again and looked at the floor, embarrassed. I jolted when Cain put his hand under my chin and lifted my head up so that I was looking at him.

"Now as much as I love to see you embarrassed, I'd like to spend our time together doing something other than me watching you blush."

Cain followed me up to my room and whistled as he turned in a circle. "Are you sure this isn't your dad's room?" He asked, hinting at all the deer related items.

"Ha ha. I can't help that he likes deer so much." I swiped the deer shorts he was holding up out of his hands and he chuckled. I'd love to hit him if it wasn't so attractive to see him smiling.

"Dinner's ready." Cain said, putting away a book he had pulled off the shelf.

"How do you know?" I asked, sliding off my bed.

"Your dad told me. He isn't very happy with me having told you what I am. He's even more unhappy with the fact that you're my soul mate."

"Why? Why doesn't he seem to like you?"

Cain just shrugged in response and went downstairs.

Dinner was quiet, the only sounds coming from our cutlery hitting our plates. My dad watched us closely, as if we'd suddenly choose to get naked and start making out in front of him. I cleared my throat and dad glared at me, his mood getting worse as the night wore on.

"Thank you for dinner, Lucas, but I should probably get going now."

"Any time Cain." My dad said, his voice seemingly sarcastic. "Drive safe."

I watched as Cain walked down the stairs and then the door as it shut in my face.

I turned to see dad staring at me, his arms crossed, tapping his foot. "When were you going to tell me that you two were going out?"

"WHAT?!" I shouted. "Dad, we're not going out."

"Then why would Cain tell me you were?"

"Because... Because..." I had no answer. Why did he tell my dad that?

Dad sighed. "I don't not like Cain, and I do trust him, but he is dangerous."

"You were fine with me being friends with Abi."

"Abigail is... Different. Maybe ask Cain since you two are so close now."

"Dad..."

"I'm sorry. I guess I'm just shocked, my little girl is growing up a lot quicker than I hoped."

The cafe was quiet at this hour, I don't know how Aldrich could afford to stay open this late.

"It is when the creatures of the night come." He had said, winking at me. But the only creature of the night here right now, was me.

Aldrich brought me the biggest mug of cocoa I had ever seen and after taking one sip, the best I'd ever had. He was a kind old man and I enjoyed his company right now as he sat across from me, telling me about his days as a rowdy teenager.

"Ah! My favourite night prowler." He exclaimed looking past me. I turned around to see Cain standing at the entrance. Aldrich had shuffled back behind the counter and was grinding some coffee beans.

"May I sit?" Cain asked, pointing at a chair. I nodded in reply.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"As Aldrich said, I'm his favourite night prowler."

I pondered how much Aldrich knew about Cain.

"He knows. If that's what you're wondering." He answered for me. "But I kinda lied, too. I was worried after dinner and I wanted to know if you were okay."

Was I okay? I didn't even know. I couldn't sleep and this cafe had become my sort of sanctuary. I slapped my hand on the table suddenly, making Cain jump. "Why did you tell my dad we were dating?!"

Cain's ears went red and I swear I could feel the heat radiating off him. I'd read that werewolves had a much higher body temperature than humans, but looking at Cain wearing his sweater and scarf, it must just be a myth.

"It kind of just came out. I honestly don't know why your father is disapproving of me, and it was the only way I thought I could be close to you without him worrying too much."

I closed my eyes and buried my head in my hands. "I think he's even more worried now."

Aldrich placed a big mug of coffee in front of Cain who thanked him. "You are very lucky to have found such a beautiful girl, Cain." He said, smiling warmly at us. It was my turn to blush.

We sat quietly, finishing our drinks. It was hard not to stare at Cain, and I tried my hardest to find interest in random crumbs on the table, but my eyes always seemed to go back to staring at him. He took a sip of his coffee and licked his lips. Oh how I wished I was that coffee right now.

"Can I take you home?" Cain asked as I finished off my drink.

"Oh, I drove so..."

"That's okay, I didn't." He said, holding his hand out for my keys.

I don't know why I put so much faith in someone who was still pretty much a stranger, and a dangerous animal at that, but I smiled as I placed my keys in his hand and held it there for longer than I should have, shivering over the tingling sensation that I had begun to crave.
