Dancing

The Sadie Hawkins dance was about midway through, with the clock striking eleven in the cafeteria. The staff had moved the tables to make room for balloons, decorations, and food, and a huge dance space left in the middle. People were on the floor dancing to whatever Top 20 hit the DJ had decided to play. Remus sat at one of the tables with a soda next to him, trying to decide whether or not he even liked this song. He could only recognize one or two, and of course they weren't going to play anything metal. He was getting pretty bored now.

Remus honestly didn't know why he was here. Neither girls or boys had asked him to go, at least as a date. Bailey had asked Ryder, but he knew that otherwise he wouldn't have come. Leo and Hariette were probably making out in a corner and avoiding the chaperones. Kit had come because, well, it was a party. He refused to miss a good party, date or no date. But Remus had only come because everyone else in the band did. He didn't have a legit reason to come.

With a sigh, Remus took another drink of his soda and looked around the room. When he saw a certain someone walk by, he slammed the can down and coughed, trying not to choke too much. When he gathered himself again, he turned back to the person. He had no idea Kaleb had come to this dance. The boy had just walked by talking to two other people. He was wearing a suit and a blue tie that matched the color in his hair, which was just as fluffy as normal. Remus didn't know how good he looked in a suit. He continued watching him until Kaleb walked into the bathrooms. A moment later, someone sat loudly next to him.

Remus turned to find Kit with a big smirk on his face. He had a blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a buttoned vest, along with dress pants and shoes. "What were you looooking at???" he asked, trying to talk over the dance noise but still only in their hearing range. Which was pretty hard.

Remus was thankful for the dimmed lights as he felt his face heat up. "N-Nothing…" he stammered. "Just… drinking my…" He nervously glanced at his soda. "… Mountain Dew…"

Kit put his elbow on the table and leaned against it. "I just watched Kaleb walk by. You couldn't have been looking at anything else!"

"Are you saying that I was staring at his butt or something? Because I-" Kit waggled his eyebrows. "I hate you." Remus then rested both elbows in front of him and buried his face in his hands. "Oh my god, I'm so gay…"

Kit patted Remus' back. "Yes, yes you are," he said. "I think you should go talk to him, honestly."

Remus sighed again and pushed his hands through his hair. "Yeah, because taking love advice from you is the best decision I can make," he said.

Kit nodded. "Because how many people have you dated?"

"… 0."

"And how many have I dated?"

"…"

"See?" Kit said, grinning. "Just go talk to him. There's only, like, an hour of the dance left. If you're lucky, maybe you'll catch him at the slow dance." Then Kit got up and left to do whatever it is Kit does.

No matter how much Remus wanted to deny it, Kit was right. He needed to go talk to him while he was still here and take the chance. When would a situation like this happen again?

Remus stood up and looked around the room, trying to catch a glimpse of Kaleb. Had he even come back from the bathroom yet? He didn't want to go in there and look for him; that would seem creepy and desperate. He found a trashcan and threw away his half finished soda and leaned against the wall next to it awkwardly. Maybe fate would be kind and Kaleb would end up walking by him or something.

"Alright, it's time for the ladies to find their boys and slow it down~" The DJ's voice rumbled across the room, followed by the beginnings of a slow song. Remus got off the wall in surprise. Was he too late?

Out of the corner of his eye, Remus suddenly saw someone running towards him. He turned, and when he could identify whose face it was, his heart jumped into his throat. Kaleb skid to a stop in front of him, breathing harder than normal and smiling. "I'm glad I found you!" he said. "To be honest I didn't realize you were here."

Remus laughed a little. "Yeah… me neither." He could feel his face grow hot again."W-Why were you looking for me?"

Kaleb immediately stood up straight, then cleared his throat and said, "Uh… would you like to dance? With me?"

Remus was sure he could hear how fast his heart was beating by now. He tried to sputter an agreement, but nothing coherent was coming out, so he just shakily smiled and nodded. Kaleb smiled again and held out his hand, which Remus happily took.

The two walked out to the floor and stopped at a random place. But Remus wasn't sure how to slow dance with anyone, much less another guy. And Kaleb was so short compared to him.

Apparently Kaleb knew what to do though. "Just put your hands here…" he said, putting Remus' hands on his hips. And before he could say anything, he put his hands on Remus' sides and pulled him closer. "And mine here."

Remus was too scared and in love to ask or say anything. His heart started beating faster again, and he hated it. It made him feel sick. But maybe it was just the butterflies in his stomach getting excited. Did Kaleb feel the same way too?

When they were set, the boys started rocking to the beat of the music. Remus could feel the hot stares of a few people around them, but he tried to ignore them and made eye contact with Kaleb. He wasn't sure if it made the situation awkward or romantic, so he caught himself looking away and back every few moments.

"Do you actually like me?" Remus asked, then quickly regretted it. His face was red from embarrassment now. And by looking at his face, he could tell Kaleb was a little taken aback too. "I-I'm sorry, that was really rude…" Now he felt like crying and he didn't know why.

Kaleb put his hand on Remus' cheek. "Oi, it's alright!" he said gently, trying to calm him. Then he sighed and continued, "I know I don't usually hang out with you or anything, but I was just too scared to talk to you. I thought you and your friends were too popular to talk to…" He chuckled a bit nervously.

Remus blinked in surprise. "I thought you were too popular for me! I'm not cool."

"But you're in a band. Bands are cool." Kaleb then stroked Remus' cheek and whispered, "I love guys who play the bass to be honest."

Remus' heart fluttered in his chest, full of happiness and relief. He snuck a quick peck on Kaleb's lips. Then they both laughed and put their foreheads together, the whole time never stopping their dance.

A few feet away, Ryder had Bailey in his arms as he awkwardly swayed to the music. Bailey gazed over his shoulder and saw the two boys dancing and smiling. "Aw!" she gushed. "They're so cute!"

Ryder turned his head to look and grinned. "Someone's gonna get it tonight~" he said, followed by a smack on the face from Bailey.
